Every system used to control the climate in your home has three basic components.  They are: a warm or cooled air source, a way to distribute the air that’s been heated or cooled to each room in your home, and a way to control or regulate the system which typically is the thermostat.  When put together, the warm air source, such as your furnace, and cool air source, such as the air conditioner, typically uses the same air ducts to distribute the air and thermostat to regulate the temperature.  Any of these components of your hvac system could be the culprit if it stops working.

A common principle is put into play when it comes to the heating and air conditioning on your system.  That principle is that heat always moves from a warm object to a cooler one, much like the manner in which flowing water travels from a higher level to lower level.  In short, heat is put into the air by the furnace in order to warm your home and heat is removed from the air by your air conditioner so as to cool your home.  Simple right?

Some form of fuel is burned by all hvac units be it electricity for the air conditioner or gas or fuel oil for the heater though sometimes even the heater will use electricity.  If a heat pump is used, it is powered by electricity and will both heat and cool air.  It will pull the heat from the air inside your home during the summer, and it pulls the heat from the outside air to warm the home during the winter.

So when you turn your furnace on, fuel is consumed to power that source.  Whether it’s electricity, gas, or oil, it’s the burning of that fuel that produces the heat driving it to the living areas of your home via wires, pipes, or air ducts.  Then that heat is blown out through heating panels, radiators, or registers.

Electrical power is used to cool a gas in its liquid state when an air conditioner is turned on.  By making contact with the cooling coil, the warm air within your home is cooled and that air is distributed via ducts and registers to each room.
