It was because of that fact that in January of 2006, the U.S. Department of Energy raised the minimum energy efficiency rating for air conditioners.


The new increased energy efficiency ratings are useful for everyone since they help with air pollution as well as reduce business and home energy costs.

But this does not really seem to affect most homeowners or business people.  The presumption is that a higher initial investment would ultimately be cost effective by in the long run, and they would be able to save on their energy costs this way.

If the first fact, that one sixth of the United States’ electricity goes in air conditioning, impresses you or causes you to take notice, you would be all the more pleased to know this tidbit of information.  The Department of Energy assumes that by the year 2030, the energy and SEER laws will be revised once again. When a hvac unit gets some age on it there is pretty good chance you may need to add Freon to keep it cooling properly.
Over time, small leaks can occur in your system and you start to lose Freon. At first, this loss just makes the unit work harder and will raise your energy bills and put added stress on your unit’s compressor which uses the refrigerant to help cool the motor.

Eventually the unit will no longer cool the home and you realize you need to call a service company to come check it out.
I made such a call. Thing is though, I contacted a couple of companies to for this purpose. One outfit I called said they were going to charge $185 per pound of Freon and would not tell me how many pounds I might need.

Now, what I’ve learned is, while it is impossible to give an exact number when a system is low, service contractors still know for sure how much the system originally held and give an estimate as to how low the charge might be by the pressures on their refrigerant gauges.
One thing you definitely want to remember. When a company tells you they need to add Freon, make sure you watch them weigh it in. Most guys will just hook up a jug of r-22 and make up whatever amount they want!

If you need Freon, make sure you do this!

Make sure they weigh the bottle before they attach it to your system as well as after they have added the refrigerant. You will be shocked at how many service technicians do not even have a set of scales on their trucks!!

There is no way to know how much Freon was added without a scale. Many will tell you that they can tell by the pressures on their gauges but that is a flat out lie. If you do not want to call out another company then at least lend the guy your bathroom scale so you do not get overcharged and then call the office immediately and complain… It could get you a discount!

And remember, very few ac systems hold more than 10 pounds of Freon. Most average around six pounds or so. If a tech says you need five or six pounds then you can assume the system is just about empty and you have a pretty significant leak.

If he does not recommend a leak search then make sure you have him note on the ticket that if the refrigerant leaks out again within a 60 day period, the amount billed to you will go towards the cost of a leak search and repair.

Every system used to control the climate in your home has three basic components.  They are: a warm or cooled air source, a way to distribute the air that’s been heated or cooled to each room in your home, and a way to control or regulate the system which typically is the thermostat.  When put together, the warm air source, such as your furnace, and cool air source, such as the air conditioner, typically uses the same air ducts to distribute the air and thermostat to regulate the temperature.  Any of these components of your hvac system could be the culprit if it stops working.

A common principle is put into play when it comes to the heating and air conditioning on your system.  That principle is that heat always moves from a warm object to a cooler one, much like the manner in which flowing water travels from a higher level to lower level.  In short, heat is put into the air by the furnace in order to warm your home and heat is removed from the air by your air conditioner so as to cool your home.  Simple right?

Some form of fuel is burned by all hvac units be it electricity for the air conditioner or gas or fuel oil for the heater though sometimes even the heater will use electricity.  If a heat pump is used, it is powered by electricity and will both heat and cool air.  It will pull the heat from the air inside your home during the summer, and it pulls the heat from the outside air to warm the home during the winter.

So when you turn your furnace on, fuel is consumed to power that source.  Whether it’s electricity, gas, or oil, it’s the burning of that fuel that produces the heat driving it to the living areas of your home via wires, pipes, or air ducts.  Then that heat is blown out through heating panels, radiators, or registers.

Electrical power is used to cool a gas in its liquid state when an air conditioner is turned on.  By making contact with the cooling coil, the warm air within your home is cooled and that air is distributed via ducts and registers to each room.
